From football fields to treading the boards

From football fields to treading the boards There aren’t likely to be any calls of the familiar “ohh-ahh Cantona” chant at the French footballer’s latest string of public appearances.

Having played himself in Ken Loach’s Looking for Eric, he’s swapped the big screen for the stage and is set to tread the boards for the first time tonight (January 26th).

Although he’s known for his theatrics on the pitch, many are intrigued as to whether his charisma will translate to the stage.

Face au Paradis (Faced with Paradise) is a two-man play telling the stories of two survivors trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.

In an interview with the BBC, Cantona said: “I love passion and I just want to try different things, to feel in danger sometimes. The goal is always the same: To play and feel pleasure.”

We’ll have to wait and see how he fares with the critics after opening night – will it be a tour de force or should Cantona pull on one of his vintage T-shirts sporting the number seven?ADNFCR-2904-ID-19577922-ADNFCR

And the winner is… not the Black Eyed Peas

And the winner is... not the Black Eyed Peas It’s that time of year again when we’re inundated with awards ceremonies and (usually) the same string of winners.

But this weekend the NRJ Awards in France provided some amusement that was unrelated to the music.

A mix up saw the Black Eyed Peas pronounced the winners of the gong for best international group, only to have it taken away as the band’s name had been mistakenly read out.

American singer Kesha and French choreographer Kamel Ouali were presenting the award and left the stage looking a little silly after no one arrived to collect the trophy.

Ouali later explained that he’d been confused as the card listed the nominees in addition to the winner – although you’d have thought they’d make it clear which was which.

German band Tokio Hotel were in fact the victors and did eventually claim their prize.

The blunder could lead to some funny t-shirts in time for the next awards ceremony.

Despite losing out in the best international group category, the Black Eyed Peas didn’t leave empty handed as they picked up the accolade of best international song for I Gotta Feeling.

Let’s hope they have better luck at the Brits, where they’re up for best international album for their latest offering The End.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19574744-ADNFCR

Controversial comedian to premiere film at Sundance Festival

Controversial comedian to premiere film at Sundance Festival Chris Morris has never been one to shy away from controversy. His series Brass Eye and The Day Today tackled issues that most comedians avoid with a 50-foot-long barge pole.

In fact, Steve Coogan’s gaffe-prone character Alan Partridge was first introduced to UK audiences in The Day Today as an inept sports presenter.

And now it would seem that Morris’ debut onto the big screen will be no exception!

Four Lions is billed as a comedy about a group of wannabe British terrorists, it’s likely to draw complaints before it’s even been aired.

The Guardian has put the first clip from Four Lions online today, with Morris telling the newspaper that he wants the movie “to do for Islamist extremists what Dad’s Army did for the Nazis – make them look scary but also ridiculous”.

His previous efforts have spawned a number of funny Tee shirts and it’s likely that this latest offering will do the same and develop a cult following among fans of Morris’ dark brand of comedy.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19573142-ADNFCR

Mel Gibson ‘to make Viking movie’

Mel Gibson 'to make Viking movie' Mel Gibson is no stranger to unusual movie projects, in recent years he has been involved in films such as Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, which both utilised ancient and largely unknown languages.

Now it seems that he will be switching from Aramaic and Latin to Old Norse.

At a press conference for his latest movie, Edge of Darkness, Gibson talked about his Viking project.

According to collider.com, when asked what language the script will be written in, he replied: “I think it’s going to be English – the English that would have been spoken back then – and Old Norse. Whatever the ninth century had to offer. I’m going to give you real.”

Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in the Viking flick, while Gibson added that he wants to scare audiences with his depiction of the Norse invaders.

Some of Gibson’s iconic films, such as Braveheart and the Lethal Weapon series, have inspired a selection of T-shirts, which fans of the actor and director may decide to wear in support of his latest project.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19565209-ADNFCR

Factory Records to reopen as club

Factory Records to reopen as club The former offices of Factory Records in Manchester will be opened as a club on January 29th, it has been revealed.

One of the founding members of Joy Division and bassist with New Order Peter Hook told the BBC’s Steve Lamacq that the home of the iconic record label will open its doors as FAC251 on January 29th.

In the late 1980s and early 90s the music scene in Manchester exploded, with bands such as New Order and the Happy Mondays shooting to fame.

Hook experienced the rise of Factory Records and its iconic club, the Hacienda, first hand.

The “Madchester” days inspired a number of vintage T-shirts featuring slogans and symbols representative of the city’s music scene.

He has teamed up with the architect behind the infamous venue, Ben Kelly, to revamp the Charles Street building.

Hook stated that the venture was sparked by the proliferation of new bands and sounds in the city.

“The idea is to put a good old-fashioned venue, where music is the key and give them a chance to grow,” he told BBC 6 Music.

Produced in 2002, the film 24 Hour Party People told the story of Factory Records founder Tony Wilson and the Hacienda’s rise to fame.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19557717-ADNFCR

Sarah Palin makes debut appearance on Fox News

Sarah Palin makes debut appearance on Fox News Sarah Palin made her first appearance on Fox News on Tuesday (January 12th) following the announcement earlier this week that she had signed up as a commentator with the American broadcaster.

Her first interview, with Bill O’Reilly on his O’Reilly Factor show, received a lukewarm response from critics, with the newsday website describing her debut as “unimpressive”.

The Republican politician found global fame when she was selected as presidential candidate John McCain’s running mate for the 2008/09 election campaign.

Her controversial views and frequent gaffes sparked a number of political T-shirts, which could once again be seen following her appearances on the news channel.

In related news, an Alaskan publication reported that one Irish bookie has started taking bets on how long Mrs Palin will retain her job at the network.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, Paddy Power is also taking bets about which minority group she will offend first.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19554243-ADNFCR
