Meccano movie 'coming together' Almost every boy will remember unwrapping a Meccano set at Christmas and then spending hours screwing the nuts and bolts together but does this conjure up images of a movie?

Apparently it does for indie film production company Helix.

Toymakers Hasbro and Mattel have decided to cash in on the iconic plaything and will probably be hoping it’ll lead to success like that experienced by the Transformers.

But does anyone remember seeing any retro Tshirts featuring Meccano pieces?

Maybe that’ll be on the cards if the movie makes its mark.

The real question is, will they use the toy’s British name (Meccano) or will the film makers stick with the US branding of Erector Set?

As Empire magazine pointed out, if the American name sticks “the jokes will write themselves”.

It’s probably unlikely though because it’s being marketed as a family-friendly adventure. And it’s due to be filmed in 3D – no surprises there really.

Either way, it’s not bad going for a toy that started out in Liverpool and has been in production since 1907.ADNFCR-2904-ID-19620245-ADNFCR
