80s action throwback The Expendables remains top Sylvester Stallone’s new blockbuster, The Expendables, has held on to the top spot in the US box office chart.

The flick – the Rambo star’s homage to the 80s action movie – fought off the challenge of Vampires Suck to claim a second weekend at number one.

Director Stallone also takes the lead role of Barney Ross, a commander of a crack team of mercenaries paid to overthrow a dictator.

Several other well-known actors such as Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke and Arnold Schwarzenegger feature in the movie, which grossed an estimated $16.5 million (£10.6 million) over the weekend.

Stallone – whose other hits include the Rocky films, Demolition Man and Judge Dredd – recently revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he is already planning a sequel to The Expendables, which has netted around $65 million in the US since it was released.
