MGMT ‘never wanted mainstream success’

MGMT have admitted they never intended to become a mainstream band, despite achieving huge-selling singles.
The group made the follow up to the popular Oracular Spectacular album – Congratulations – a more challenging listen to avoid being pigeonholed in a genre they did not feel suited them.
“It would be wrong to say that we ever had pure intentions of being a mainstream band,” Andrew VanWyngarden explained.
He added the group began to realise people thought of them as this electro-pop dance act, “and that’s really not who we are,” he added.
Fans of the group – famed for songs including Time To Pretend and Kids – may wish to pick up a music T-shirt in their honour from 8ball.co.uk.
The MGMT T-shirt features a cartoon-style image of a hotdog with arms and legs who is wearing sunglasses with dollar signs on them.
