Fans of the Beastie Boys will be dismayed to hear reports rapper Adam Yauch is free from from cancer are premature.

After rumours of the news circulated on a radio show, the artist released a statement revealing that he was still undergoing treatment for the disease.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer of the preaortic gland and lymph node in 2009, Yauch’s band is still set to release a new album in spring 2011.

The star sent a message of thanks to his fans which clarified his current state of health: “While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer-free are exaggerated.”

Despite this, the stoic Beastie Boy said he was still optimistic and hoped to be clear of the disease “in the near future”.

Those wishing to honour the legend might wish to consider buying one of the many hip-hop t-shirts featuring his band to show their support.
