We love the Flaming Lips here at 8Ball. Their unique blend of psychedelic rock absolutely ticks all the right boxes for us. If you’ve ever seen them live, you’ll know only too well that they don’t beat around the bush when it comes to putting on a great show! Last year’s tour saw the band play to some of the UK’s biggest festivals and the shows involved frontman Wayne Coyne bouncing around on top of the crowd in a giant inflatable ball and giant cannons firing out tonnes of confetti.

They certainly love their gimmicks too. Back in 1997 they released a 4 disc box set called ‘Zaireeka’ that were made to be played simultaneously on 4 different systems. Together they created an amazing quadrophonic sound. A novel idea, I think you’ll agree.

The latest gimmick from the band is a mammoth 6 hour long track. Yes, you can expect 6 uninterrupted hours of psychedelic bliss. New Flaming Lips trackAnd if that isn’t enough, the track will be sold with a strobe light toy to help you really ‘get in the zone’! The track is called “I Found This Star on the Ground” and has only just been completed, so we can expect to hear for ourselves in the near future.

Coyne recently spoke to the Rolling Stone magazine about the project. He described the track as, “like the Velvet Underground meets Super Mario Brothers”. Sounds interesting, but we wouldn’t expect anything else from the same guys that produce a giant pair of hands with laser beams coming out of them, in the middle of a live set (see picture above). Coyne explained the reasoning behind the strobe light toy;

“I wanted there to be some type of music that you could play while you played with this toy – you spin this little disc, and it has these little animations on it that kind of come to life when you put this strobe light on it. And you could play with it for hours. I mean, I don’t know if you could play with it for six hours, but it’s kind of meant so that kids can like, take LSD and play with it.” Hmmm…

In a further gimmicky twist, fans can pay $100 to have their name included in the lyrics and the money will be donated to the Humane Society and the Academy of Contemporary Music.

We’ll keep you posted when we hear any more news regarding the release date. We can’t wait!
