Gotta get me some of that sofa

Earlier in the week, we got talking about an interview we read with Alice Cooper talking about his addiction to golf. In the interview he talked about the early days of his music career being filled with the stereotypically rock ‘n’ roll traits of sex and drugs, especially the drugs.
He is extremely open about the fact that he was ‘high’ for most of the 70s and 80s and the sheer amount of drugs and alcohol he consumed should have probably killed him. Many other musicians around him at that time did succumb to the drugs and as such, Cooper had an epiphany of sorts. A bottle of whisky a day and going for days on end without food began to take its toll on Cooper’s body and he checked himself into rehab for a brief spell.
When others would turn to religion in times of despair, after being discharged from rehab Cooper looked for an alternative way to satisfy his addictive personality and found himself becoming completely obsessed with golf. He’s now been sober for over 30 years and tries to play 36 holes every day, rain or shine. He claims that sometimes he can’t even function properly without taking to the course for a few holes first.
Sure, a lot of people play golf, but to become addicted to it? We thought that a little strange and it got us thinking; what other strange addictions do people have? We searched around and we found that there are some pretty strange addictions out there. Here are a few of the weirdest ones we found:
Tanorexia
On Friday or Saturday nights in bars and clubs up and down the country, you can’t fail to notice the unnatural orange glow coming from girls and guys who’ve spent too much time on the sun bed or went a little overboard with the fake tan. Ok, so you live in Torquay and you just so happen to have the perfect tan? Yeah right! Who you trying to kid?
It’s true, a tan can help give you a healthy glow, but some people just take it too far. Although it hasn’t been accepted by the medical community, the term given to the act of obsessive tanning is ‘tanorexia’ and it seems that it’s not that uncommon. It seems that these people can’t differentiate between having a ‘healthy glow’ and looking like an Oompa Loompa.
Pica
Just a couple of weeks ago, we found a story about a three-year-old girl who was addicted to eating bricks, rocks, sticks and light bulbs. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that this is pretty dangerous and although the little girl understands that it can be harmful, the urges to consume these things are just too much.
She suffers from a rare condition called ‘Pica’, which gives the sufferer an overwhelming appetite for non-nutritive substances.
In another case reported in the press, a US woman by the name of Adele Edwards is addicted to eating sofas. Just watch the video if you don’t believe us!
Body Modification
Cosmetic surgery is sadly becoming the norm. Botox and boob jobs are becoming as normal as chippie suppers on a Friday night (maybe that’s just us). More than 10% of the UK’s population have some sort of piercing and it seems that everyone knows of someone with a tattoo. But some people just don’t know when to stop. One botox injection turns into years of plastic surgery and one cheeky piercing can turn into a face covered in tattoo ink.
Addictions to body modification are becoming increasingly common and unfortunately, they often end disastrously. We can only assume that these guys could never have dreamt in their wildest dreams that they’d end up looking like this. Or maybe they did….each to their own.

There are so many strange addictions out there, just have a look around on YouTube to see for yourself! In the meantime, if unlike the guys pictured above, you’re looking for a great Halloween costume, head on over to our Halloween tshirts section and get yours ordered in time!
