Idiots in glass houses….

So, there’s a video that’s been floating around on Facebook and Twitter for the past week or so, titled ‘Dalston Superstars, Episode 1’. What we can gather from people’s responses is that you either love it or detest it. People either ‘LOL’ their faces off or want to puke all over themselves after watching it.
Basically, VICE magazine has cottoned on to the fact that Dalston has become the focus of much ridicule of late. In fact, many of the uber-trendy areas of our beloved capital city have become the butt of many jokes. As such, the people at VICE decided to make their own mockumentary, which basically rips it out of the people who’ve become commonly known as ‘Shoreditch Twats’, who we imagine make up a vast percentage of their readership!
This isn’t the first time someone has decided to stand up and shout out about these creatures. Did you ever see ‘Nathan Barley’ on Channel 4 a few years back? This was the legendary Chris Morris and Charlie Brooker’s genius, fictional comedy series that infiltrated the moronic lifestyle of a vein, shallow, Shoreditch-based, “self-facilitating media node”.
The show constantly mentioned, “the rise of the idiots”, referring to the creatures of Shoreditch who could barely string a sentence together, but were the cutting edge of fashion….but that makes them cool, yeah? However annoying Nathan and his friends were, the show was hilarious and we’d recommend that everyone watches it. Take a look at this clip for a little taster of what it’s all about.
Since then, there have been several other bits and bobs creep up on the net, following the same theme of laying into the kids that are “so hip it hurts”. Check out this video, titled “Being a Dickhead’s Cool”.
Anyway, VICE magazine, the epitome of everything that’s ‘cool’, have created their very own mockery of Shoreditch-scenester life. However, we’re not entirely sure that it works for them. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not totally adverse to VICE magazine, but come on guys – don’t sh*t on your own doorstep! It’s a bit like Saint Bono encouraging everyone to dig deep and help solve all that’s wrong with the world when he avoids paying taxes in his home country whilst it’s in economic crisis – it doesn’t quite add up.
Take a look for yourselves and let us know what you think. Do you think it’s funny, annoying or could you simply not care less?
