Ever wondered what an RPG set in the insane, foul-mouthed world of South Park might be like? Well, you should be able to get your hands on it before too long.

Game developers Obsidian (Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas) announced last week that they’re working on South Park: The Game, but the initial details were vague.

They have now confirmed that South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker will be overseeing the project, writing the script and the dialogue – this will be first time they have been directly involved in a game based on the long-running cartoon.

Players will take control of a new character who can be customised according to 5 different classes: Adventurer, Rogue, Paladan, Wizard, and an undisclosed fifth class “made up” by Cartman, who will act as the player’s guide.

Visually, the game will echo the simple 2D animation the TV show is known for.

In terms of the style of combat, comparisons have been drawn with titles such as Paper Mario.

Commentators seem to think this will be a serious attempt at making an RPG game that’s much more than just a piss-take, with the consensus being we could be in for something pretty epic.

Indeed, they probably satisfied any urge they had to poke fun at the genre with the brilliant 2006 South Park episode ‘Make Love, Not Warcraft’.
