Last year, it was revealed a sequel to Top Gun was in the pipeline. All around the world, people could hardly contain their excitement at yet another addition to the sequel/remake frenzy of recent times. OK, that’s a lie. In fact, the news completely passed us by at the time…

But now that cunning stunt specialist and Scientological sofa-jumper Tom Cruise is in the picture, we thought we should sit up and take notice.

The sequel will be directed by Tony Scott (Ridley’s little bro), who also directed the original Top Gun in 1986 which sent Cruisey-boy straight into the big-time.

They also worked together on Days of Thunder in 1990, and Cruise says he’s keen to work with him again.

According to Cruise: “We all want to make a film that is in the same kind of tone as the other one and shoot it in the same way as we shot Top Gun.”

But the question is… what exactly was the tone of the original Top Gun? Is it simply an all-American tale of national pride where a group of alpha males give themselves cool nicknames and look super cool in totally cool fighter planes?

Or is there a deeper subtext in the film?

Is it actually COMPLETELY GAY?

The one and only Quentin Tarantino makes a pretty compelling argument to that effect…

Still not convinced???

If that’s not conclusive proof, we don’t know what is!

Whether Tom Cruise actually prefers boys to girls is a whole other question. His marriage to Katie Holmes may be creepily unconvincing, and we’ve all seen him trapped in a closet on South Park, but we’d prefer not to receive a call from his lawyers (and we actually have a bit of a soft spot for Cruise and his cheesiest movies), so we’ll let you make up your own minds…
