At the Drive-In Reform
filed in Music News, New Tshirts on Jan.11, 2012
Remember At the Drive-In? Wild hair, big sideburns, raging guitar riffs, piercing vocals and nothing short of epic tracks. If not, don’t worry – it’s been a long eleven years since we last saw them together, but perhaps this will jog your memory.
“Aaaahh, At the Drive-In”, we here you cry. Well, for those of you that do know who we’re babbling about, you’ll remember just how damn good they were. And, being the bearers of good news, we are pleased to tell you that they have reformed. Hoorah! That’s right, according to Twitter and various other reliable sources, the El Paso five-piece are to reunite and they have confirmed a live show at California’s Coachella festival. As of yet, there have been no reports of them hitting the studio, so it looks like the lucky swines who will get to witness their first show in eleven years will be treated to a full set of old hits.
The band’s third album, the seminal Relationship of Command, was released in early 2000 and received much praise from the music world. It was considered a landmark in modern music – NME rated the album 9/10 and stated simply that it was “absolutely storming”. We couldn’t put it better ourselves. However, a year after the album was released, the band split to form two brand new bands – The Mars Volta and Sparta (both well worth a listen).
The recent news got us pretty excited. Since the split, we’ve often found ourselves stopping at At the Drive-In, as we flick through our CD collection (those shiny magic discs that played music before MP3s were invented), here at 8Ball HQ. They’re one of those bands that you can listen to again and again – they don’t get boring. So, in short, we are made that they are getting back together. Let’s hope we get to see them going nuts at one of their notoriously energetic live shows in the UK some time soon!
Here’s a brlliant clip of them playing on Jools Holland’s show back in 2000. Enjoy!
