Last week, a 10 second teaser was released that had the Internet buzzing about the possibility of a sequel to one of the definitive films of the 1980s – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

The teaser was released ahead of the Super Bowl in the US, and fuelled speculation that Matthew Broderick was set to reprise what was clearly the best role of his career a full 26 years after he originally played the king of all truants.

Many fans of the film were hoping that a full trailer for something along the lines of Ferris Bueller: Rooney’s Revenge would be broadcast during the Super Bowl, but, alas, their optimism was misplaced.

Frankly, they should have really known better. The Super Bowl, which takes place on 5th February, isn’t a time for nostalgia and sentimentality; it’s the most sought after marketing opportunity on US TV, and big brands spend millions of dollars using this platform to promote their products.

It turns out the teaser was actually building up to a Honda commercial. Here’s Broderick bunking off his movie-making duties to take his new Honda out for a spin:

Fair play to Honda – they don’t mess about when it comes to advertising. Remember this gem?

Were you hoping the talk of a Ferris Bueller sequel was the real deal, or do you think it should be left alone?
