Yes you read that correctly – don’t adjust your television sets….or your computer screens. Following a successful run on Broadway, American Idiot is heading to this side of the pond and will be playing in several theatres across the country.

Sound a bit weird? We thought so too. But, having achieved such great success in the USA, we had to look into a bit further before we pass any sort of judgement. The Toronto Star billed it as, “ One of the most exciting musicals you’ve ever seen!” We’re not averse to a good musical and, like most people, we’ve listened to a bit of Green Day in the past. So far, so good.

The musical features a cast that look like they stepped straight out of Glee, and tells the stories of three young men’s journeys into adulthood. Of the three men, Johnny and Tunny head to the big city in search of freedom and to find a meaning in life. Meanwhile, Tunny stays in suburbia with his pregnant girlfriend and opts to build a family of his own. Gripping stuff. And all of this to the soundtrack of Green Day’s 2004 album, American Idiot.

We searched around for a few videos to see what all of this will look like on stage, and here’s an example of what to expect:

Apparently, it’s a fairly big budget production and they’ve gone to town with lighting and scenery. But to us, this could well be a clip from High School Musical and we’re not really sure what to make of it. It’s just a bit nauseating. We’ll have to see if pop-punk musicals translate as well with British audiences.

So what do you think? Will you be bagging yourself some tickets or would you rather excrete sharp objects? We reckon there will be divided opinions on this one, but we’d love to here what you think.
