Kick-Ass sequel in the offing
filed in Tv & Movie news on Feb.20, 2012
When it’s done well, there’s nothing quite like some totally gratuitous violence in cinematic form. Throw in a bit of underage profanity and some classically hyperbolic acting from the one and only Nicolas Cage, and you’re onto a winner.
Without doubt, Kick-Ass was one of our favourite films of 2010 (yep, it was released nearly 2 years ago. Scary, right?)
And we weren’t the only ones who were blown away by the film’s combination of bad language, badass battles, and brilliant characters. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw called Kick-Ass an “explosion in a bad taste factory” (he meant that in a good way, of course).
But others were less impressed. The Daily Telegraph’s Tim Robey complained the film was “hollow [and] glazed” and renowned critic Roger Ebert went even further, condemning Kick-Ass as a piece of “morally reprehensible” cinema. If reviews like that don’t get people interested, not much will! Good job guys.
Given that the film cost $28 to make and made over $96 million back at the box office, it was surely only a matter of time before a sequel was announced, and Mark Millar (writer of the comics from which the film was adapted) has now confirmed that filming will begin this summer.
The screenwriter and director from the original Kick-Ass won’t be involved in the sequel, but replacements have already been found. The cast hasn’t been announced, but insiders reckon Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will all be reprising their roles.
So here’s to another round of perfectly executed (but totally hollow, glazed, and morally reprehensible) carnage!
