orbital pusher soundtrack

It was recently announced that the mighty Orbital will provide the soundtrack for a British gangster film, which is due to be released in May this year. The film is a remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s gritty, raw and critically acclaimed Pusher, which was released back in 1996.

Pusher was Refn’s first feature film and the Danish director addressed the issues of drugs, prostitution and the brutality that comes with such vices. The film was well received in Europe and beyond, and in the nine years following the release of the original, two sequels were released, which too were extremely successful. All three of the films are delivered in a slick, uncompromising manner, and they probably aren’t best suited for the faint-hearted among us. Expect plenty of violence.

This year, director Luis Prieto brings the story to the UK – London to be exact – and has drummed up the likes of Agyness Deyn and Richard Coyle to star in his adaptation. We’ve got our fingers and toes crossed in the hope that the remake turns out to be as good, if not better, than the original.

We’re pretty excited about this one, and even more so now that we know the soundtrack looks set to be pretty darn special. The news that Orbital will be providing the score came not long after they announced plans to record their first studio album in over 8 years. In a recent interview, Orbital’s Paul Hartnoll said:

“Working on Pusher was a great opportunity to create a score that draws on both moody thriller styles and dance music in equal measures. Full of anthemic film noir moments. Brilliant.”

The Brighton-based duo were pioneers of the UK’s electronic music scene and were at the forefront of the rave scene in the late 80s/early 90s. The pair are best-known for such hits as Chime, Belfast and Halcyon. They’re renowned for putting on truly spectacular live shows, and with a string of festival dates in the pipeline this summer, fans will get a chance to relive some of the old-school classics, as well as hearing their new material live.

Let’s just remind ourselves of what Orbital do best, with this clip from their epic performance at Glastonbury in 2004. If this doesn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention, you probably need to turn the volume up (or get your head checked)!
