Glastonbury chief wins beard of the decade award Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis has won the title of “Beard of the Noughties”.

The 74-year-old festival supremo’s famous facial hair – described by the Daily Telegraph as “Abraham Lincoln-esque” – was officially recognised by the Beard Liberation Front (BLF), an informal network of beard wearers.

Spokesperson Keith Flett revealed that Eavis, whose iconic annual festival on a Somerset farm has inspired countless retro T-shirts and other garments, narrowly beat Cuba’s revolutionary leader Fidel Castro to the prize.

“Michael Eavis is a true hirsute icon of the noughties and he beat Castro to the accolade by the merest whisker,” Mr Flett commented.

“The support was split between Eavis and Castro.”

Former ministers Charles Clarke and Frank Dobson also featured on the BLF’s shortlist, along with the poet and broadcaster Michael Rosen.

Previous winners of the BLF’s annual best beard award include Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and England cricketer Monty Panesar.
