Muse claim best artwork award British prog-rockers Muse have come out on top in an online poll to find the best record cover of 2009.

The Devon band picked up the Best Art Vinyl prize for the sleeve to The Resistance – their fifth studio album – which was produced by London design firm La Boca.

A shortlist of 50 record covers was whittled down to a top ten after the online vote, with Journal For Plague Lovers by the Manic Street Preachers taking second place.

Fever Ray’s self-titled debut album was named the third best artwork of the year, with Massive Attack and Green Day also featuring in the top five.

Muse, who released their debut album Showbiz in 1999, have inspired many T-shirts with their eye-catching artwork and extravagant live performances.

Last month, US music website Pitchfork produced a list of the worst album artwork of 2009, naming and shaming record covers from artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Chris Brown, Kid Cudi and Tori Amos.
