Stars come out for Avatar premiere Avatar, the long-awaited new film from Titanic director James Cameron, had its premiere in London last night (December 10th).

Believed to be one of the most expensive movies ever made, the film was first scripted by Cameron in 1994 and has been in production for over four years.

“Tonight we’ll pull the cover back and show the world, so to speak. It’s a huge relief to let people see it and talk about it,” the director told the BBC.

Cameron greeted fans on the red carpet in Leicester Square alongside Avatar’s stars Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

Set in the 22nd century on a distant planet called Pandora, the film is a science-fiction epic featuring a groundbreaking mix of live action with animation and 3D effects.

Avatar is the first feature film Cameron has directed since 1997′s Titanic, which remains the highest-grossing movie of all time.

The Canadian film-maker was also responsible for inspiring a fresh wave of retro science-fiction T-shirts when he directed Aliens, the 1986 sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic Alien.
