The Italian has had his fair share of detractors following the national team’s poor showing at the World Cup, with the FA even already deciding that his successor will be an Englishman.

But Ferdinand believes the disappointing campaign in South Africa under the 64-year-old “doesn’t mean he is a bad manager”.

“We qualified in great style,” he added. “The media people and those in the know who were saying he was ‘Don Fabio’ have now changed course.”

The Manchester United defender also highlighted the importance of putting the team ahead of individuals and admitted that squad changes are needed.

Capello tried to lure Paul Scholes out of international retirement in the summer, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
