James Cameron's 3D epic reached the landmark figure in just 17 days, with demand for tickets equally as strong in China and Italy as it has been at cinemas in the US.
According to 20th Century Fox, which distributes the film, the movie's success has been like a "freight train out of control".
"I think everybody has to see Avatar once, even people who don't normally go to the movies, they've heard about it and are saying, 'I have to see it'," said executive Bert Livingstone.
"Then there are those people seeing it multiple times."

A host of stars and films walked home with major awards at last night's Oscars.
