Avatar director James Cameron is one of five film-makers in the running for a prestigious industry accolade.
The Canadian has been nominated for this year's Directors Guild of America (DGA) award alongside Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, Jason Reitman and Lee Daniels.
DGA president Taylor Hackford said: "The five nominees for this year have each expressed an indelible vision that transported audiences to vivid vistas of cinematic art."
Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic Avatar recently became the second highest grossing movie of all time with a worldwide haul of $1.14 billion (£700 million) at the box office, suggesting that it could be a vintage T shirt design of the future.
Tarantino has been nominated for the DGA award for Inglorious Basterds, while Bigelow - Cameron's ex-wife - appears on the shortlist for The Hurt Locker.
Jason Reitman earned his nomination with Up in the Air and Lee Daniels got the nod for Precious. He is the first African-American director to be nominated for the prize.
