Superman villain to be played by Michael Shannon

The wait is over for Superman fans eager to know who will play the part of General Zod in the upcoming reboot of the superhero franchise, Man of Steel.

Michael Shannon will take on the role so memorably portrayed by Terence Stamp in Superman II.

Following the announcement, director of the new film Zack Snyder was full of praise for his new charge, saying: "Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

He will star opposite British actor Henry Cavill as the eponymous hero, while Diane Lane and Kevin Costner have signed up to play Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Snyder claimed General Zod is one of Superman's most formidable foes because he knows more about the crimestopper.
