The Dark Knight Returns set for animated adaptation

An animated film based on the comic The Dark Knight Returns is in the pipeline and should cause quite a stir when it is released.

With the success of Christopher Nolan's past two Batman films, the public appetite for more action from the caped crusader has never been stronger.

Now it seems one of the most important graphic novels in the superhero's canon may be made into an animated movie.

The Dark Knight Returns was written by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson, with the story following a middle-aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement and rubbing everyone up the wrong way, from old foes to former allies.

Fans of Batman also have the prospect of Nolan's third Batman feature to look forward to, The Dark Knight Rises, which will see Christian Bale reprise his role as Wayne, while Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman.
