Avatar sets new box office record

Yes, it's finally happened - something has knocked Titanic off its box office pedestal.

Although it wasn't a giant iceberg that toppled Leo and Kate's romantic journey, many people will no doubt be relieved to have a new name at the top of the list.

Avatar has wowed global audiences and in six weeks, has taken $1.859 billion (£1.151 billion), beating the Titanic's $1.843 earnings in the same period during its 1997/98 stint in the cinemas.

James Cameron appears to have a magic touch when it comes to winning over the crowds and could easily be considered the most successful director of the past two decades in terms of earnings from his movies.

For any of you that didn't know, he was also the man behind Titanic and won an Oscar for his directorial skills.

Movie Tshirts featuring fans' favourite characters and moments from Avatar will no doubt begin springing up around the world.

In China, the film appears to have captured the public's imagination in a truly unique way – a rock column, previously known as the Southern Sky Column, has been renamed Hallelujah Mountain after it was reported that the peak inspired the floating mountains in the movie.
