Retro T-shirts news: Star Trek named 2009's most pirated movie

30/12/2009

Figures from a file-sharing blog have awarded Star Trek the dubious honour of being the most pirated film of 2009.

According to TorrentFreak, JJ Abrams' update of the sci-fi franchise was illegally downloaded by internet users nearly 11 million times this year.

Blockbuster sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was at number two in the most-pirated chart with 10.6 million unlicensed downloads, while Guy Ritchie's crime thriller RocknRolla took third place.

Star Trek, which stars Chris Pine as James T Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, has enjoyed favourable reviews and commercial success since its release in May, no doubt prompting many fans of the original series to revisit their retro T-shirts.

Last month, the Hollywood Reporter revealed that the film was dominating the home cinema market with 5.7 million DVDs sold in its first week.

The most notorious case of movie piracy this year concerned X-Men Origins: Wolverine, with an unfinished version of the film appearing online several weeks before its official release.
