Jimi Hendrix receives 'best guitar riff' honour

Voodoo Child by The Jimi Hendrix Experience contains the greatest guitar riff of all time, according to a new music poll.

The track, which featured on the artist's 1968 album Electric Ladyland, came top in a survey carried out by the Music Radar website to find the world's best guitar riffs.

Music Radar's editor-in-chief Mike Goldsmith told Sky News that the poll was based on "the ultimate pub conversation".

He said: "Everyone's got an opinion. We got just shy of 5,000 responses via email, Twitter and Facebook."

Hendrix, whose unique guitar style and iconic Woodstock performance inspired a range of vintage T-shirts, died in 1970 at the age of 27.

The opening riff from Sweet Child O'Mine by Guns N' Roses came second in the survey, while Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love was in third place.

Contemporary bands also featured in the top 20, with Muse's Plug In Baby at number 12 and Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes at 15.
