Wear a St Patrick's Day T shirt and see William Wallace's sword

12/03/2010

St Patrick's Day is almost upon us, that time of year when everyone wears something green and feels obliged to drink at least one pint of Guinness.

But movie fans and history buffs alike could be in for a treat if they travel to Galway for the St Patrick's Day parade because William Wallace's sword will be carried through the city's streets, the Galway Advertiser revealed.

You won't get to see Mel Gibson covered in blue face paint brandishing the weapon but it's still something worth seeing - if you can get to Ireland.

It's hard to believe that Braveheart first arrived in cinemas 15 years ago and paved the way for a host of historic movies from the actor/director.

Now, we know Wallace wasn't Irish but it's all part of an initiative to forge closer links between Galway and Stirling in Scotland, according to the local newspaper.

So, if you want to get a close-up look at the sword used by the Scottish national hero, you can see it in the Galway City Museum in the week running up to the parade on March 17th.

Make sure you wear a St Patrick's Day T shirt while you're out and about though, after all, it's good to blend in and get into the spirit of the celebrations.
