Could Borat host the Oscars? Don't get those funny T-shirts out just yet

In an interview with National Public Radio's Fresh Air show, co-producer of the biggest Hollywood awards event Adam Shankman told audiences what could've been.

Speaking to Terry Gross, he said that Sacha Baron Cohen was the first choice to host the Oscars this year but that the Academy "swatted it down because it was too big a wildcard".

There will no doubt be groans of disappointment as the thought of the comedian hosting as one (or several) of his alter egos flashes through everyone's minds.

Famous for characters such as Ali-G and Borat, it would've been a great way to make the ceremony more interesting.

Sadly, fans will have to make do with their Borat T-shirts and movie DVDs rather than watching the Oscars if they want to see the star in action.

Instead of Baron Cohen's particular brand of humour, we'll be able to see the famous duo of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin who will no doubt get some laughs at the ceremony on March 7th.
