Nirvana
So was Kurt a genius or in the words of Liam Gallagher a ‘sad twat who couldn’t handle the pressure’? Kurt was the last rock god, there will be no more figures like him in rock n’ roll everything since Kurt has either been done before, knowingly ironic or derivative or maybe we don’t need them anymore, we just want the collective music. And that’s what Kurt was interested in; it was all about obsession with music and art. Nirvana’s roots lay in a punk rock, DIY ethic, with a passion for noise and truth of expression, unfortunately these purist roots were essentially Nirvana’s undoing. Any band has ambition, but when the lead singer has a battle between artistic integrity and success, respect and money raging like WW3 in his head, topped off with a penchant for self-loathing and depression, he might just blow it off. Fortunately for the rest of the world he didn’t do it until he’d changed it, the world that is. ‘Bleach’ was raw, loud and dirty and brought the band that coveted cult indie status. Then Geffen came along dangled a different carrot under their noses and ‘Nevermind’ was spawned, cue worldwide fame and tabloid trash. ‘In Utero’ was the reponse, followed by the quietest f**k you in rock n’ roll with MTV’s ‘Unplugged’. Real Music TM was reborn, and we all still enjoying that legacy now. Sad twat or Genius….Don’t really matter…
