Ghostbusters sequel release date and lead cast members announced
A couple of tweets this week from director Paul Feig seemed to confirm two things about the future of Ghostbusters; the main cast of the new film and a release date of July 22nd 2016.
Heading the cast will be Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, who co-starred in Feig’s Oscar-nominated comedy Bridesmaids in 2011. They will be joined by Saturday Night Live cast members Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.
It’s 31 years since the original film starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson was released in 1984, which was then followed by Ghostbusters II in 1989. Since then talk of a second sequel has been mooted but regularly shot down by Murray, most notably in 2014:
Those guys, Danny and Harold [Ramis], were at the top of their game [for the first movie]. They were burning nitro at that moment. Unless you have a really clear vision, you’re always trying to recreate that.
After Harold Ramis sadly passed away last year and original director Ivan Reitman ruled himself out of the running any further expansion on the first two films seemed an unlikely prospect.
But with Feig now in the driver’s seat it seems the project is well and truly up and running with a new look cast:
It’s a shame to just let this thing sit there. My favourite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all female cast? That would be really fun
Reaction on the official Ghostbusters Facebook page seems to be pretty negative, with one fan even threatening to see the new Power Rangers movie instead, but in the wider industry it seems to be a positive move to completely re-boot the cast.
