Things are getting strange I’m starting to worry

Big news in TV land this week as Fox announced plans for a 6 part mini-series revival for the cult sci-fi series The X-Files.

Now 13 years since the series ended in 2002, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully when filming commences this summer.

Being one of the longest running sci-fi shows in TV history, The X-Files aired from 1993 to 2002, and spawned two spin-off feature films in 1998 and 2008.

Since then Duchovny appeared in 7 seasons of the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Californication as Hank Moody, while Anderson has most recently been seen in the critically acclaimed series The Fall.

Confirmed at the top

Series creator Chris Carter said: “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break… The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

Meanwhile some of Fox’s head-honchos had this to say: “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.

“The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning.

“Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”

When can we expect it?

It’s incredibly early days for this current project but it looks as though, along with Carter back as writer and executive-producer, other “key cast members” including Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner) involved too.

Former X-Files writer Vince Gilligan has also expressed an interest in returning to the show, provided he can fit it in his work schedule.  Production starts this summer and is expected to be aired early next year, although this is yet to be confirmed.

So there we have it, after a deluge of reboots and remakes we actually have a revival of a TV show that everyone seems excited about! But.. are you?
