Banksy’s latest exhibition revealed… Dismaland

Your friendly neighbourhood graffiti artist Banksy is back again with arguably his biggest project to date… Dismaland.

Based in the old Tropicana lido on the Weston-super-Mare seafront the new “family theme park unsuitable for small children” opened for press previews on Thursday 20th August, after being developed in top secret from the public eye.

After eyebrows were being raised at some of the installations being shipped in, locals were being led on that a Hollywood film had begun filming with Banksy working closely with the North Somerset Council to keep everything under wraps.

The Dismaland Bemusement Park isn’t just about Banksy though, there are hundreds of pieces, installations and audience participation works by over 50 artists including Damien Hirst, Jenny Holzer and Jimmy Cauty.

Although you almost instantly think it’s a firing shots at Disneyland, Banksy reckons that’s not the case:

‘It’s not a swipe at Disney… I banned any imagery of Mickey Mouse from the site. It’s a showcase for the best line-up of artists I could imagine, apart from the two who turned me down.’

Just to be on the safe side though marker pens, spray paint, knives and ‘legal representatives of the Walt Disney Corporation’ have been banned from the site.

Amongst the most eye-catching works are a huge dilapidated Disney-style castle, a Grim Reaper on the dodgems, a killer whale leaping from a toilet and staff members in pink hi-vis jackets with black balloons that say ‘I am an imbecile’.  Check out some more photos below…

Pretty apt for a seaside town…

As well as more eye-catching works there’s Banksy’s familiar satirical style too

Staff had applied for the job as “film extras” but all wear hi-vis pink jackets and look as dismal as possible

Dismaland is open to the general public from Saturday 22nd August, so let us know if you’re going to visit!
