When thinking about funny movies from the 90s, it’s easy to overlook the first Men in Black film. That’s because most people remember it as an action film! Will Smith elevates this stunner of a famous 90s movie to a comedic masterpiece, with Tommy Lee Jones playing the straight man.

8: Romeo + Juliet

7: Toy Story

The first Toy Story was a revelation. One of the best 90s family movies ever, Toy Story is one of those franchises that just never gets old. Pizza Planet t-shirts are just as popular now as they were when the film was released in 1995 and are ever-present on lists of film t shirts. Despite the sometimes ropey CGI, this remains a masterpiece and one of the most enduringly popular famous 90s movies.

6: The 6th Sense

There were lots of fantastic horrors released in the 90s. Near the top of the pile has to be The 6th Sense. Not only is it one of the best 90s horror films, but it’s also just as creepy now as it was when it was on the big screen. M Night Shyamalan has never managed to top this, and the merchandise for the movie still appears on lists of the best horror movie t shirts.

5: Se7en

A stunning blend of tension and horror, Se7en is one of the best 90s horror movies. It might have been memed a bit too much, but it’s still incredibly compelling and Brad Pitt gives the performance of a lifetime. Stunning and iconic movie images make this one of the top 10 best 90s movies.

4: The Truman Show

The film that shifted the direction of Jim Carrey’s career, The Truman Show is a stellar piece of filmmaking. Not only is this one of the best films of the 90s, but it’s also just as (if not more so) relevant today. Just incredible.

3: Thelma and Louise

Released in 1991, this timeless adventure is a buddy movie with heart. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon pull no punches when it comes to this raw and emotional story of two best friends on the run from the law and the tedium of their everyday lives.

2: Point Break

What is there not to love in Point Break? Keanu Reeves doing his best surfer bro impression, Gary Busey allowed free reign on the madness, and Patrick Swayze going full mystic makes for fantastic storytelling from director Katheryn Bigelow. It’s a film that still appears on a lot of 90s graphic tees, despite the appalling remake.

1: The Shawshank Redemption

The story of the redemption of Andy Dufresne is one of the most remarkable films ever made. Not only is it one of the best films made in the 90s, but it’s also one of the best films ever made. A truly incredible piece of filmmaking that will go down in history as one of the best non-Hollywood blockbuster movies of all time.
